Building a leading city of culture and the arts based on Daegu’s longstanding traditional culture
The leading traditional music orchestra in Korea, the Daegu Metropolitan Traditional Music Orchestra was formed in May 1984, and has since strived to preserve, modernize, and increase citizens’ familiarity with traditional music.

In its regular, special, and youth concerts and overseas and regional tours, the company gives performances that feature a balance between tradition and contemporary trends. It also recreates new and unique Korean culture through music in an effort to foster local culture.

In January and August, the company conducts an advanced course on the practice and theory of traditional Korean music for citizens who wish to build on their understanding of traditional local culture, and by holding traditional Korean music concerts that focus on each voice type, such as bass, tenor, alto, soprano, the company improves the skills of its members while increasing its appeal to citizens.

Since its formation, the Traditional Music Orchestra has been directed by Gu Yun-guk, its first director and permanent conductor (May 1985-November 1990), as well as Kim Deok-hwan (November 1990-October 1992), Yun Myeong-gu (November 1992-October 2000), Park Sang-jin (December 2000-May 2006), Ju Young-wee (January 2007-December 2011), and You Kyung-jo (October 2012-present).

The orchestra is a major contributor to the local culture of Daegu and has made traditional culture a larger part of citizens’ lives.
